Onion(vengaya) samabar - Ingredients:

Red gram 2 1/2 tbsp
Turmeric(haldi) powder 1/4 tbsp.
Salt to taste.
Refined oil 2 tbsp.
Mustard seeds 1/2 tbsp.
Onions medium diced to 6 pieces 4-5.
Fenugreek seed(methi dana) 1/4 tbsp
Dry red chilli 2-3
Curry leaves a few.
Sambar powder 1/2 tbsp.
Tamarind soaked in 2 cups of water for 2o minutes 1
Green chilli slit 1
Asafoetida(hing) 1/4 tbsp.
Green coriander(hara dhaniya) for garnishing.

Onion(vengaya) samabar - Directions:
  1. Pressure cook the red gram with turmeric powder and salt.Remove and mash slightly and keep aside.

  2. Heat the oil in a wide bottomed vessel;Saute the mustard seeds unti they start crackling;Add the onions and saute for a while;Add fenugreek seed, dry red chillies and curry leaves;Saute for a minute so that onions are not burned.

  3. Add sambar powder and stir for a minute.Add tamarind extract geen chilli, and asafoetida simmer on lower heat until onions are cooked.

  4. Add the red gram and bring the mixture to boil.Remove from heat.

  5. Serve with garnished coriander accompanied with rice or idli.
