Vatral kolambu - Ingredients:

Tamarind(imli) lemon sized dissolved in 2 cups of hot water
Refined oil 1 tbsp.
Mustard seeds 1/4 tbsp
Dry red chillies 2
Asafotida (hing) a pinch.
Fenugreek seeds 1/4 tbsp
Bengal gram 1 1/4 tbsp.
Sambar powder 1/2 tbsp
Turmeric (haldi) a pinch
rice flour mixed with water 1 1/2 tbsp
Jaggery powder 1 1/2 tbsp.

Vatral kolambu - Directions:
  1. Extract the tamarind pulp and juiceb.Keep aside.

  2. Heat oil in a pan and saute mustard seed till it crackles.Add dry red chillies asafoetida and fenugreek seed;Saute for a minute.Add bengal gram and saute till it turns golden.If you are using any vegetables add at this stage.

  3. Add samabar powder,turmeric powder and tamarind juice .Simmer for 10 minutes.

  4. Add a smooth paste of rice flour and water with out any lumps and boil the mixture.Add jaggery and mix well.

  5. Serve hot with rice and pappad(appalam).
